FAMILY COURT ATTORNEY

Hiscock Legal Aid Society, Syracuse, New York seeks an attorney to represent adult clients in Family Court matters, including Abuse/Neglect, Custody/Visitation and Support Violation cases. This position presents a unique opportunity to gain significant litigation experience, and obtain training on a wide variety of family court matters.  Our attorneys are in court almost on a daily basis.  The attorneys in the family court program are very passionate and knowledgeable. They routinely collaborate on cases to provide strong, zealous advocacy for our clients.  HLA works as a team to provide our clients holistic representation which provides the attorneys with access to a vast amount of knowledge and experience including practice areas beyond family court.  The Family Court Program team includes law assistants and other support staff who assist attorneys with daily tasks, including but not limited to service, screening, scheduling, discovery, correspondence and client advocacy. Our more experienced attorneys are provided with opportunities and encouraged to present at CLE’s and other legal platforms or community events. A demonstrated commitment to public-interest law and to serving the indigent required. Admission to New York State Bar required.

DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY

HLA seeks an attorney to join our established divorce and family law practice to represent low-income adults primarily in divorces and other family law matters (custody, domestic violence, child support, spousal support, etc.) in Onondaga County Supreme Court and Onondaga County Family Court. This position presents a unique opportunity to join a collaborative office working to provide high-quality divorce and family law legal services to those in need in Onondaga County. Demonstrated commitment to public-interest law and to serving low-income persons. Admission or pending admission to New York bar. Ability to multi-task while remaining detail-oriented. Strong written and oral advocacy skills. Diverse economic, social, and/or cultural experiences.

APPEALS PROGRAM – STAFF ATTORNEY

The Hiscock Legal Aid Society, a nonprofit legal aid organization, seeks an attorney committed to indigent defense for its Appeals Program.  The Society is the appellate defender for Onondaga County, providing representation in criminal and family court appeals to the Fourth Department and Court of Appeals.  Excellent analytical, research, writing & oral advocacy skills required.  Admission to New York State Bar and appellate experience preferred; recent law graduates with strong writing backgrounds may be considered.

PAROLE PROGRAM – STAFF ATTORNEY

HLAS seeks an attorney committed to indigent defense for its Parole Program. This position includes frequent client interaction at the local and county jails, representation at preliminary and final revocation hearings, performing legal research, and filing writs of habeas corpus.  Excellent communication, writing and oral advocacy skills required.  Admission to New York State Bar and parole or trial experience preferred; recent law graduates with demonstrated interest in indigent defense will be considered.

CIVIL PROGRAM ATTORNEY 

HLA seeks an attorney to join our Civil Program to represent low-income adults in a variety of potential practice areas, including housing and tenant’s rights law, unemployment insurance benefit law, and matrimonial law. The specific areas of practice will depend on the interests, skillset, and experience of the hire, as well as the needs of the office. This position presents a unique opportunity to join a collaborative office working to provide high-quality civil legal services to those in need in Onondaga County.

Require Qualifications: Demonstrated commitment to public-interest law and to serving low-income persons. Admission or pending admission to New York bar.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to multi-task. Strong written and oral advocacy skills. Diverse economic, social, and/or cultural experiences.

Salary: Depends on experience.
