Legal Aid helped me decide to file an order of protection, a critical first step in regaining my life and stability. Still,  I was terrified that this order might make him even more explosive. It was a dangerous situation not knowing what would trigger him and still having to deal with him every day to exchange our son for court-ordered parenting time.  There were several volatile occasions when I needed to call on my lawyer to clarify how to maintain my safety while upholding court orders. I don’t know what I would have done without Legal Aid helping me navigate life and safety with these complexities.

My lawyer helped me with every aspect of the citizenship process, filling out and filing the application and helping me prepare for the interview and the United States Civics Exam.  Having her help was very comforting.

Thanks to HLA’s advocacy I finally became a United States Citizen and eventually got my passport. 

Coming to the office, I felt relaxed. The receptionist was so pleasant and so respectful. I’ve never, ever called and felt like I was bothering anyone.  That’s so important when you’re going through what I was going through. Hiscock Legal Aid Society was the safe place I needed.

I can understand why people would be worried to talk to Hiscock Legal Aid Society. I was nervous, too. What I can say is this: I feel like the people at Legal Aid were the only ones who treated me like a human being. They treated me so well. Without them, I’m not sure I would have had the strength to continue.
